The world in which we live and work in has become increasingly complex and rational approaches to problem solving exhibit obvious constraints in their capacity to deal with the challenges of modern society. The pace of change is also imposing transformation on organisations – away from bureaucratic, hierarchical structures towards flatter, more agile forms of organisation in an attempt to deal with unprecedented complexity and uncertainty.  Obvious solutions to complex problems are rare and usually based on superficial and inadequate consideration of the problem as a system.


Despite these difficulties,  managers and staff need to devise solutions to the challenges and find innovative ways to deliver and sustain these solutions to increasingly sophisticated customers and consumers. Indeed the customer is often involved in the problem-finding and solution-design processes, adding to organisational complexity.

This blog will discuss cycles of learning based on consideration of management theory, practice implementation and reflections on the subsequent outcome to understand where  theory, practice and ones own view of the world need to be adjusted before starting new learning cycles. The author believes that cycles of theory, practice and reflection can greatly improve ones own professional skill as a manager and provide skills that  help bring improvement in performance personally, to the companies we work for and hopefully for the society we live in.

Perfect solutions are rare in modern, complex business environments. Approaches that allow experimentation and learning are increasingly employed to enable  problem-finding and solution-design. This blog is not intended to be any different. So feel free to embark on a quest of learning with me.
